oEmbed your OERs

Many bloggers are familiar with copying embed code from sites like YouTube and Slideshare to include the content in their blog posts. Now there's a simpler, more robust way...

I've tried to write a plain English tutorial, for a non-technical and technical audience - all you need is experience authoring content in a blog or content management system like Drupal or Moodle.

COP15: An OERs and Collective Intelligence Experiment

As part of the OLnet project, and the Collective Intelligence sub-project an Open University team has prioritised the COP15 climate change conference, as a mini-experiment to put the Cohere semantic annotation and connection tool through its paces. This is part of our project's mission to research the impact and evidence base of the OER movement, and build its capacity via different forms of collective intelligence. Our specific interest is in experimenting with infrastructure to facilitate OER/CI (Open Educational Resources/Collective Intelligence) the latest update to the Cohere Mozilla Browser Add-On, which provides Diigo/Sidewiki-like web annotation as an addition to semantic connection making and map visualization.

  • OER10 conference - arrangements being made.
  • Openlearn event, next Tuesday afternoon, Jan 19th,  in the afternoon. Patrick and Karen will be there with OLnet banner on a stand from 2pm. Presentation at 4pm, will be webcast on KMi Stadium - publicly available.
  • A series of workshops in IET relating to their programmes of work are underway. Patrick is leading much of that. OLnet work is key. This is looking at OLnet's inward connection to the OU. Karen has the dates of the meetings. OLnet is located in the 'Learning in an Open World' Programme, which is headed by Grainne.
  • 27 January - next update teleconference with Hewlett. Karen will circulate the draft report tomorrow (hopefully) for us to comment.
  • Wikisym 2010 - co-hosted with Wikimania, in Gdansk Poland, Gdansk, beginning of July. The Open Collaboration Programme Track is coordinated by Giota. Deadline for papers is 7 March - will go in to ACM journal after peer review.
  • Sara has been promoted to Support Team Manager. So won't be giving us the same support - she needs to find us a replacement.

OLnet team endures blizzard conditions to hold weekly meeting ;-)

With the university closed, the OLnet project held their weekly team meeting in FlashMeeting, making for an altogether very pleasant experience ;-)

OLnet Full Team Meeting – Tuesday 15 December 2009

The meeting did not follow the original agenda because it took longer to get started with equipment issues and then there was a fire alarm in the middle which took out half an hour.

What is "Infrastructure" in the context of OLnet?

From email from Simon Buckingham Shum 15 Dec 2009:

"Infrastructure"

This word isn't meant to refer to just techy stuff  but a rich notion of what constitutes a real infrastructure used in everyday life, particularly in epistemic communities.

This was summarised in the Hewlett funded OPLI report:
A Review of the Open Educational Resources (OER) Movement
http://www.oerderves.org/?p=23

OLnet Team Meeting dates for 2010

All of the OLnet Team meeting dates for 2010 have been added to the Google Calendar "OLnet Meetings".  If you do not have access to this calendar or know what to do with it, please let me know.  I have also produced a list from Google Calendar, which is attached as a PDF to this message (an interesting feature to try).

In an effort to be more open about what we're doing as we're doing it, I (Doug) am going to be liveblogging our regular OLnet team meetings. Some things may not be entirely clear or understandable, but this should give you a view in to what we're doing as we plan to do it. Do bear in mind that these are partial, incomplete and sometimes downright inaccurate notes captured at speed and do not reflect a final considered view of the OLnet project - or indeed any of the individual mentioned.
